Baseball Gods, Please let it happen again, please!!!!!

    Today’s New York Post:

The only question now is whether yesterday’s latest ghastly meltdown by the bullpen in a 7-4 loss to the Braves damaged any internal organs.

A five-run nightmare in the ninth inning certainly didn’t help the Mets’ postseason chances or shoo away any of those lingering ghosts from last September’s historic collapse.

Once the carnage from yet another bullpen disaster was finally tallied and the Phillies had swept a doubleheader from the Brewers, the Mets’ lead in the NL East was down to one game.

With 14 games to play, is history unthinkably repeating itself?

“It’s going to be a tough two weeks for us,” said , yesterday’s starter who saw seven strong innings of work go up in smoke in the hideous ninth. Read more…

12 left to play. The Phils entered the weekend 4 out of the wild card, now they’re tied. Well done, Phils. It appears Burrell may have snapped out of his disastrous slump, Howard is going off, Victorino is stepping up, and Brett Myers has been the second best pitcher in baseball for the last month and a half. Break out those rally towels, folks. We’re going to have a fun two weeks.

Gasoline in Venezuela is $.25/gallon, the cheapest in the world.  The only catch is, in order to take advantage, you have to live in Venezuela.

FYI, in February, 2007, less than 2 years ago, gas was $1.97 per gallon at my local station.  Check out prices in your area: Gas Buddy

IT was clear from the day he got his driver’s license where Louis Cerone was going to hang out at the Jersey Shore.

My sister is six years older than me, and she and her girlfriends had found Sea Isle,” said Mr. Cerone, who grew up in the Italian heart of South Philadelphia. “She beat it into me: ‘Sea Isle. Sea Isle. Sea Isle.’ So that’s where I came.”

Some two decades later, Mr. Cerone and his sister, Vicki Angelos, are still in Sea Isle City. They own side-by-side businesses now — Uncle Oogie’s Pizzeria and Sweet Pete’s, an ice-cream parlor, near 61st Street and Landis Avenue on this skinny barrier island 20 miles south of Atlantic City.  Story…

Had another amazing summer this year.  We finished working 59th street yesterday (Labor Day) and will see you there next Memorial Day weekend.  We’re not closed for the season yet, however.  Fall Family Festival is September 13th at JFK and the Promendade.  We’ll have the grill out for that one.  Additionally, Irish Weekend is September 20th.  We will be having another hot dog eating contest on that day.  It will take place mid afternoon in La Costa parking lot (JFK and Landis Ave).

We’ll also be taking part in Sea Isle’s first Harbour Fest on October 4th.  More details to follow.

We just received some nice accolades from Philadelphia Magazine and I’ll be heading to Sea Isle for a photo shoot tomorrow.  Look for us in the late spring ‘09 issue, ”Guide to the Jersey Shore”

Great summer, everybody.  As always, I appreciate your patronage.

Brendan Borek loved to surf. He spent many hours on the beach with his friends waiting for the incoming high tides — which brought about the best surfing conditions. So it was natural for his friends to wish him “high tides” during his struggle with cancer.

In keeping with that same shared feeling of community good will, Brendan’s Fund strives to provide “High Tides” conditions for local Cape May County families who have a child or young adult with cancer. A number of events will be held next week, including Tuesday’s art expo at the Avalon Yacht Club (Bubba and Malcom Flynn may show up to play a couple of tunes) and a surf contest on Thursday in Avalon. Bubba Dogs are the Best!!!

    2234798585_871855583b.jpg

In a taste test, Nathan’s Skinless All Beef Hot Dog beat out the rest.

    Hot dogs: Best in show

We put franks to the taste test.

You might say hot dogs are as American as apple pie.

Except we eat 10 times as many hot dogs a year as slices of pie, according to the market research group NPD.

We down most of our dogs - roughly 7 billion - between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to the Washington-based National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. That’s 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that time frame.

And on Independence Day alone, we’ll eat 150 million hot dogs.

Philadelphia ranked fourth in the top hot-dog-consuming cities of 2007, with $46 million worth of franks eaten. New York, Los Angeles and Baltimore/Washington beat us out.

But what’s the best-tasting hot dog? That’s a matter of personal preference, of course.

We asked adults and children to participate in a taste test, using eight popular supermarket brands of hot dogs.

Three were all beef (Nathan’s Famous, Hebrew National, Dietz & Watson); three were a mixture of beef, pork, chicken and/or turkey (Oscar Mayer, Ball Park, Hatfield Phillies); and two were organic, uncured brands from Whole Foods (Applegate Beef and Wellshire Turkey). The hot dogs were simply boiled.

Nathan’s was the clear victor on the adult side, finishing a full 2 points ahead of runner-up Hebrew National.Ball Park was a distant third, with the remaining dogs falling further behind. Wellshire All Natural Uncured Turkey dogs were rated dead last by almost all of the tasters.

TASTE TEST RESULTSHot dogs are ranked in order of preference, with tasters’ comments and price information.TOP DOGS

#1: Nathan’s Skinless Beef Franks: Tasters liked the “good spice flavor” of these top-rated dogs, calling them “simply delicious.”

Hebrew National Beef Franks: “Balanced” and “flavorful,” these kosher franks were deemed by more than one taster to be “salty but pretty good.”

Ball Park Franks: Fans of these franks praised the “mild” flavor; most agreed with the taster who deemed them “generally good.”IN THE DOG HOUSE

Hatfield Phillies Franks: Several tasters complained of a “soft,” “mushy” texture.

Applegate Organic Uncured Beef Hot Dogs: Though some tasters praised the “smoky,” “meaty” flavor, most complained of the “tough skin” that made these organic franks “too chewy.”

Dietz and Watson Deli Beef Franks: “Tastes like school hot dogs,” one taster wrote of these middle-of-the-road franks that were most often described simply as “plain.”

Oscar Mayer Weiners: Many complained of the “artificial” flavor and “manufactured” appearance of these popular dogs, though some tasters liked the “smoky” flavor and “nice spice.”

Wellshire All Natural Turkey Uncured Premium Franks: “I had no idea a hot dog could be this disgusting,” one taster wrote of this last-place finisher; others agreed, calling it “gross,” “weird” and “scary looking.”

For Sea Isle City folk, this story appeared in the AC Press 10 days ago. In speaking with some “in the know,” a plan on the table after renovations are complete to marina (see story) is to build amusements (yes, for kids!). Those that long for the days of Fun City may soon see bumper cars back in Sea Isle.

Sea Isle City plans to renovate marina, build walkway

    By BRIAN IANIERI Staff Writer

    Published: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

SEA ISLE CITY - City Council is planning $3 million in renovations and additions to its marina, including a Boardwalk-type walkway along the back bay.At a meeting Tuesday, council introduced a $4.4 million borrowing plan that would allocate money for the Sea Isle City Marina, located along 42nd Place near the main entrance to the city from the Garden State Parkway.

City officials said the marina work will include a new bulkhead and a raised walkway about a 1,000 feet long.

City Council president John Divney said the marina work fits into the city’s plan to make the area more attractive to visitors.
