SICBP Mascot School and other weekend happenings
Sunday, July 8th, 2007Yesterday, July 7th, was the conclusion of the 28th annual Sea Isle City Beach Patrol Mascot School. The program, which teaches water safety to children ages 4 - 8 is a phenomenal success and a credit toward the SICBP. Some pix follow below.
A friend recently celebrated her first birthday on the beach in Sea Isle City. All had a blast. The crab races, however, were a bust. Good job with the party, Mom.
Please bite his nose, crabbie.
Additionally, on Friday night, the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol competed in the first lifeguard races of the year, the Cape May County championships. The patrol, which placed a somewhat disappointing sixth, did have some bright spots and, for the first time in quite a while, a doubles rowing crew that is competitive.
Sean Riley and Colin Corcoran (both former La Salle High oarsmen), placed second and led the race at the flag. Sean and Colin’s size, both of whom weigh approx. 170 lbs., didn’t help their cause as they turned and had to row dead into a stiff west wind. Heavier crews don’t sit up as high in the water when rowing into a head wind which provides an advantage. This was the case on Friday. Ocean City pulled it out once again.
Sean and Colin remind me of the most efficient crew that I ever raced against back in the mid-80’s, John Millar and John Ridgeway. They too were a smaller crew who rowed for Ocean City and had phenomenal success, winning both the South Jersey Championships and the Margate Memorials a couple of times. I’m hoping that Colin and Sean can enjoy similar success.
The swim was the other lone bright spot for Sea Isle on Friday. 16 year old John McGinley finished a strong third in his first ever out of town competition.
In the future, allow Sean Riley to row both doubles and singles. The doubles race, which was only 11 minutes long, is the first event. The singles race was approximately 45 minutes later and it was only a 3 1/2 minute sprint. Sean, who won both singles and doubles for Sea Isle in qualifying for the race, could easily have recovered in time to perform well in both. Bubba’s opinion of course.
