    Ideas Anyone?

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

The incoming city council ran on a platform of transforming city government and getting the taxpayers involved, both resident and non-resident. I attended a meeting recently and can attest that this seems to be the case. The meeting was chaired by incoming council members John Divney, Frank Edwardi and Bill Kehner. About 30 residents were there with the selfless intention of volunteering their time in order to improve the quality of life in Sea Isle City. It was a brief yet productive meeting with abundant optimism.

I’ve volunteered for the “Shoulder Season Committee.” The mission is to build on the shoulder seasons of the summer, loosely defined as May/June and September/October. The Family Fall Festival, held two weeks after Labor Day, has already been a huge success. There is talk of an Irish Weekend sometime in September.

While I and some friends have several ideas for the committee (hot dog eating contest, mini-triathalon, etc…), I’d be grateful for more ideas that I could pass along.

    Please post your thoughts.

Lastly, get involved! Those soon entering office (July 1st council is sworn in) would love to hear from you.

    Later,

    Bub

2007 South Jersey Lifeguard Race Schedule

    Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Sea Isle, it seems, may have a competitive team this year. First race is next Friday in Wildwood Crest and features all patrols from Ocean City south. The following Thursday is the Beschen-Callahan Memorials. I was fortunate to row singles in that race in 2001 which was the first year that Sea Isle competed. We placed second and have had strong showings ever since.

Word is that Sea Isle may have a strong rookie swimmer this year which is critical for any patrol that wants to fare well in beach patrol team events.

However, any guard can attest that ocean swimming and pool swimming are entirely different. Let’s hope for good things for SICBP next Friday.

Link also appears under Sea Isle stuff, though I’m not sure how long the Atlantic City Mess, I mean Press, is going to have active link.

Kobayashi - The Hot Dog Eating Champ

    Monday, June 25th, 2007

Takeru Kobayashi has won the Nathan’s Famous July 4th hot-dog contest six years in a row. Last year, he ate a record 53½ frankfurters, buns and all, in the required 12 minutes, or roughly one every 13 seconds. He is 5-foot-7 and 131 pounds and has defeated rivals many times his weight.

This year, however, there may be some real competition. Joey Chestnut, an American, was hot on his heels last year and finished second with 52 eaten. Word is his training regimen for this year’s contest has him eating Cheetos and Tahitian Treat in mass quantity. Could be an interesting contest.
